lines in curses/termcap

Has anyone extended termcap/curses to make good use of the line drawing
features of VT-100-like terminals?  On the one hand, there needs to be
an "enter-graphics-mode" and relatives in termcap and perhaps a vector
of line styles.  In addition, however, it would be nice to be able to,
for example, overlay a vertical line segment on a horizontal one and
have the package select the line intersection character as the result.
