Writing to what seems to be a file, but is really a process

I would like to have any program write to a "special" file which is
really a program.  This is sort of an extension to the "pipe" idea,
except that the program generating th eoutput really thinks that it is
a pipe.  I think that the Berkeley sockets or multiplexed files might
implement something like this.  Can someone tell me how this can be
done?  I am running 4.2bsd on a VAX and a CADLINC 68000.
