A quick /etc/rmt question

I'm trying to manipulate a remote tape drive from within a program, and
/etc/rmt looks like just the ticket. Unfortunately, I can't get it to
work even from the shell. Here's what I tried:

    % ls -l /dev/rmt8
    crw-rw-rw- 1 root 30, 8 May 24 14:18 /dev/rmt8
    % /etc/rmt
    O /dev/rmt8 2 # command to open a device for r/w
    					# extra newline to get the reply?
    E2 # reply from /etc/rmt: ENOENT
    No such file or directory
    %
What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any (preferably e-mailed) replies.
