HELP WANTED: NFS problem(s)

We are using a MIPS M/120-5 as a file server (in addition to other tasks) to
two uVAX II's: all user directories are located on a partition on one of the
MIPS's disks, NFS'd to the uVAXen. We have encountered a problem with which
 I would appreciate some assistance.

When a file is created while logged into a uVAX, the user's umask is applied.
However, whenever a file is over/rewritten, the file permission is reset (to
4777 if user != root, same but with sticky bit set if root). Also, we have
noticed that the total space usage reported by ls -l (as well as du) for a
directory is incorrect and we have not been able to discover any algorithm
that would point at what is being reported.

NFS between the uVAXen works fine. File copies and space utilization repor-
ting works correctly when on the MIPS.

The uVAXen are running under Ultrix (2.?) and the MIPS is running under MIPS'
 variant of SYS 5.

I have searched through all the man pages I can think of....

many thanks, greg pavlov, fstrf, amherst, ny
