re-constructing a un*x boot record

Is there a standard, or accepted place on the disk where the boot record can
be found? If I read the first sector of the root partition, do I stand a
good chance of finding it?

The reason I ask is that I have a "Brand X" un*x box, running a hacked
System V.0 look-alike. Since the manufacturer is no longer in business,
hence no support, and I have not been able to uncover much documentation,
I bothers me to think that if my disk were to become corrupted that I
could no longer boot my system. Thus I am attempting to reconstruct a boot
tape. But I need to know where to find the boot information, or at least
a good place to start looking. Can anyone help?
