X-windows problem

Does anyone have experience with loading your own color tables under
X-windows (X.11)? It turns out that SUN OpenWindows objects to such
attempts, while the Tektronix and Hpollo versions are not documented
well enough to try. The default color tables do not produce a chromatic
scale, something one needs when trying to map a series of values into
a spectrum. Thanks!
