nowrap setting with stty?

How can I set my console/terminal so that it does not 
wrap lines longer than 79 chars. I frequently log onto a
VAX from my 286 Xenix machine with TERM set to vt100, but
several of the VAX programs don't work properly as they seem
to output 80 chars or more per line and so the lines wrap.

The wrapping seems to be done locally on the 286 machine.

If anyone can suggest a way to set a nowrap feature locally,
please tell me.
