problem with multiscreens

I'm having a problem with multiscreens on a 'new' machine. I'm
running SCO XENIX/286 2.2.3 on a 16 MHz 286 with 1 MB ram. On
startup, six screens are automatically allocated based on the
amount of memory; however, the last three screens do not work
properly. I can log in (so getty is working) and the cursor moves
'properly' but no text is echoed to the screen itself. Also, if
I switch back and forth between one of the working screens and one
that does not echo, the previous working screens output remains.

I've piped the output from stty -a to a file for each of the six
screens and they are all identical, so the settings are OK. And I've
tried stty sane several times, but that doesn't help.

If anyone has any ideas, please speak up...

Thanks,
