Assuming that SCO UNIX is based on AT&T UNIX System V Release 3.2 ....

pack uses the Huffman encoding program

and

compress uses the an algorithm from "A Technique for High Performance Data
Compression" IEEE Computer Vol 17, No 6 (June 1984) pages 8 -> 19
