Although I am not familiar with the 4170E (I assume it is a 170meg
unformatted ESDI drive) its big brother the 4380 (380meg unformatted)
drive can be configured for soft or hard sectored operation. The
combination of the 4380 and the 1007A ESDI controller works fine, and
I know of several installations where they are being used reliably on
80386 Unix platforms. I suspect the same can be said for the 4170 drive.
