     As Guy Harris pointed out, in a correction to my second posting:

    Guy's right, of course, and I for my part have discovered a new level 
of embarrassment: posting an article with the 'right' (for some definition 
of right) answer, then apologizing for it being wrong and posting an answer
that probably won't work on *ANY* system. My heartfelt apologies to everyone 
who vainly tried my second [rmdir] suggestion. 

     And to think it wasn't even a Monday when I posted...
