I am using an external Telebit T1000 modem on adaptex.  Running SCO 2.3.2GT
and haven't had any trobles with it.  I do not use the dial utilities,
but have instead created the dial stuff in the Dialers file.  If you need
this, or if anyone needs it, then let me know.  My modem is setup to be
bi-directional and took some rather strange modem programming efforts to
get it to do so.
