Read screen?

I am trying to dump the screen to a program using the escape sequence
"\e[2i". The manual says that "Current screen contents are sent to the
application." Does anyone know how to read that info? I tried reading
stdin, /dev/tty, and /dev/console, and didn't get the data on any of
them (most read the keyboard). Since the shell gets the data after the
program aborts, it is obviously available, but where?
