help with ld -r

I don't have much occasion to use ld -r, and so whenever
it comes up, I've always got a few questions.

In this case, the problem/question is simply that when
I link a bunch of object files in one directory with a
bunch of other object files linked together with ld -r
in another directory, functions defined in the "ld -r"
object file (but called elsewhere) don't get resolved.

As usual, I'm sure that this question has easy resolution.
I can, of course, use a library or else just link all the
.o files together _en masse_. I'd rather know what is
going on with ld -r (at least for Xenix/386 2.3.2), though.

(Note: I have R'dTFMP, though perhaps not correctly.)
