/etc/modemcap

I am inthe process of writing some software that is liable to be used
over serial wires, or over modems representing hardwire connections.
In any case, I would like to make the software as modem independent
as possible. I looked through the tip and cu programs under 4.2, but
their handling of different modems is atrocious. Is this really necessary?
Has no one developed an /etc/termcap-like dtaatabase for modems? Or
any other kind of database, would be fine. If I don't get any positive
responses, I will probably go about developing such a package myself.
I wqeelcome buoth affirmative responses and suggestions as to what such a
database should look like.

Please post replies to : ...!harvard!elvy or elvy at harvard.arpa, etc.

Thanks,
Marc

P.S. I will summarize if necessary.
