why UUCP's won't talk query

i am seeking help deducing some strange UUCP behaviour. here's the
situation: at Mot Microsystems, there's a collection of machines
(VAX, PC's, VME systems) all running System V.2. they talk to each
other just fine. at Four Phase, there's a collection of machines
(PDP, FP systems, CT Miniframe's) all running System V.1 or V.2.
they talk to each other just fine. however, i just tried to get
a VME system to talk to a Miniframe, and they refuse to converse.

running uucico on xyz with -x6 reveals that "valid sys Shere=abc"
has occured and then we get "msg-RLOGIN" and "exit code 0". LOGFILE
on xyz reports that just after the "valid sys Shere=abc" there was
a "xyz (send Myname)" and then "HANDSHAKE FAILED". LOGFILE on abc
reports "BAD LOGIN/MACHINE NAME".

any idea what's happening? thx. e-mail responses preferred as i am
now a guest on mot.
