Modes are okay (was Porting UNIX Applications to the Mac)

Modes are okay. Sometimes they seem quite appropriate. For example,
I'm rather glad my automobile is moded (gas pedal takes effect when car
is running, different transmission gears for different cruising speeds,
headlights off when key not in ignition, and so on). Modes seem like a
good way to deal with complexity in organization and function.

Please note that I am not saying (one way or another) whether a text
editor should be sufficiently complex to benefit by being moded.
