Sun "viewpics" anyone?

  I'm looking for some help with the "viewpics" program, by Mark Weiser. It's
a fairly old program (from the viewpics.c file):

/* Copyright 1985, Computer Science Department, University of Maryland
 *      written by Mark Weiser
 */

I recently obtained the shar file from one of the archive sites, but have not
been successful in getting it to run under OS 4.0.3, although it appears to
compile OK. On a Sun-3/60, it runs, displays the icons (pixrects), then
immediately exits with a "Bad file number" message (doesn't matter which or
how many icons I ask it to display). On a Sun-4/260, it core dumps. The
line of code that seem to be causing the problem looks like this:

/*      Notification Manager */
        gfxsw_select(gfx, canvas_selected, 0, 0, 0, (struct timeval *)NULL);

So, anyone have any ideas how to tackle this (I'm fairly ignorant when it
comes to SunView programming)? Anyone know how to reach Mark? Anyone have
a replacement "icon browser" for showing multiple icons in a window? Yes,
"iconedit" can do it, but "viewpics" is much faster (I have an older Sun-3
compiled version of "viewpics" which works fine; I was trying to make a
Sun-4 version). Any suggestions/ideas/fixes/alternatives welcome. Thanks.
