Description:

Overview:

This course prepares students to install and maintain a local area network
of Sun-386i workstations that are running 386iSunOS version 4.0.1.  Topics
include: machine architecture, hardware configurations, installation of
Master Server and diskless client support, and SNAP - the System and
Network Administration Program.  This course is for new system
administrators with some familiarity with SunOS and DOS, as well as
individuals who are UNIX system administrators unfamiliar with the SunOS
environment. 

Prerequisites:

Before attending this course, students should be able to:

* Log in to a UNIX system and change passwords.
* Edit a file using one of the editors, vi or ed.
* Use the cd, mv, rm, and cp commands.
* Read and write mail as a user on a UNIX system, either from the shell or
  with the SunOS mailtool.
* Invoke the SunView window system and operate the mouse to open and
  close windows.
* Make directories and navigate the filesystem.
* Understand how to use metacharacters, pipes, and redirection.
* Use the DOS commands: dir, ren, del and copy.
* Edit a file using edlin.

Objectives:

Upon completing this course, students should be able to:

* Describe standard Sun-386i configurations, including memory and disk drive
  options. 
* Install the 386i Master Server on a network.
* Load software using the load or cluster commands.
* Start up a system and shut it down.
* Understand SNAP's purpose and uses.
* Provide file protection (system security).
* Maintain disk space.
* Maintain system log.
* Backup and restore files.
* Add, modify or remove user accounts.
* Add, modify or remove group accounts.
* Control user access.
* Describe Ethernet hardware and networking concepts.
* Understand how to add modems, terminals, and printers to a system.
* Add and remove diskless clients to/from a Master Server.
* Use multiple DOS windows. 
* Add AT/XT expansion boards (such as memory, ms-mouse, ms-windows).
* Configure PC-NFS.
* Configure mail. 
* Understand the concept of uucp operation.
* Add expansion units.
* Repartition and restore disks.
