Serial problems on a Sun 3

We are having problems with printers/terminals on our Sun 3 boxes. It
seems that ^S^Q isn't quite working properly. Here's a description of the
problem, hope one of you have encountered this and can help us.

Machines: Sun 3
OS: SunOS 4.0.1
Problem:

After about 2 or 3 pages of output to a terminal or printer, the
printer/terminal hangs and the sun seems to be waiting for a ^S^Q pair.
We just happened upon the ^S^Q sequence, playing around with our la120
(printing terminal) until we found something that restarted the output.
Has anyone seen anything even remotely resembling this? I'd track it down
myself, but our sources haven't come in yet. We have the ixany setting on
the ports, and have tried it both ways.

I feel it's either something stupid I'm not doing or there's a problem
with SunOS 4.0.1.
