PCNFS problems

We have a DOS based server that uses PCNFS to communicate with clients on
a TCP/IP network. One problem that we have had is that the server will
crash whenever a client from "far away" tries to connect to it. A
connection from a "nearby" client does not crash the server. As near as I
can tell, "far away" means two or more ip "hops". Has anyone else had
this problem?
Sun support has been EXTREMELY slow in answering our query.
