Multiple login(1) environments?

I KNOW someone(s) have done this before, but I just can't seem to find it
in the archives. Here's the sitch:

We run our (or are planning on it) SPARCs just with console getty (login:
appears on screen only). About half our users want to run raw X11R4, some
want OpWin, some want our Motif package, and some want Looking Glass (I
prefer raw X, but no politicizing here). Is it possible to modify login(1)
to querry a user at login time as to what environment he/she/it wants to
run and then start it up? I assume the only difference there is amongst
the environments we use is the L&Fs or the window managers, right? Or am I
way off base.

I seem to remember some scripts that folks wrote to do this, but I can't
find them in the archives, nor am I sure how this could be implemented.
Can you give arguments to login(1) to have it search for a variable in
everyone's .login which could be set for twm, mwm, olwm, etc? That would
seem to be the best way to do it, no?

 Thanks in advance!
