Question about Unix/Aix source archives

I can't find any reason for the problam I'm having so I'll post it here.
I've been trying to obtain some common usage files for our campus's IBM
AIX 2.2.1 RT, besides the problem of the RT not being on the internet
and having to go through a real pain in the ass way of getting files,
whenever i try to edit the decompressed source which generates the files
the editor ( INed ) hangs on me, the process continues running, but when I
try to exit, and INed tries to save the changed file, the terminal hangs at
the message "saving /u/lmiller/etc." when i get on another terminal the
editor's process is still running, but the login shell process goes idle,
and there is NO way of getting the terminal unhung except by killing the login
shell process, killing the editor's process gives me the shell prompt, but the
terminal is still hung. So the problem is how can I get the editor to save
the d*mn files, and is it because of a corruption in the file due to the
method I have to go about to get the files? In case it helps, here's what I
have to go about to get the files: I ftp from psuvm ( a VM/CMS machine ),
I retrieve the files with type I, I then run a file to convert the file so
that it's column width is no longer than 512 ( we don't have the setup to
directly ftp from OTC yet! ), I then download the file to a PC with a binary
option, then I ftp and transfer the files to the RT with type eight-bit (
the only choices are 8 bit, text, and binary ). As you can see there is a
lot of room for file corruption, but the strange part is files that are
tar'd can be retrieved and untar`d fine, but files that are compressed will
decompress but then they hang when I try to edit them. I even tried ftp'ing
our RT and retrieving the decompress'd files as text so I could edit them on
teh PC and then ftp and replace the old source file but the terminal hangs in
the middle of the ftp and again the login process goes idle. Also it might
help to state where I'm trying to retrieve these files from, I've tried
uunet.uu.net and ccb.ucsf.edu, but I obtain teh same problem with files from
both hosts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, post them or mail
them directly to me.
