Upon further investigation, it seems that the situation is a bit
different on AIX v3.1 (RS6000) - children seem to be properly
determining their tty, but I still see bizarre problems:

[csh] 4:deborah> bash
       ~
[bash] 1:deborah>
       ~
[bash] 1:deborah> passwd
       Changing password for "hogdenb"

       [1]+ Stopped (tty output)passwd
       ~
[bash] 2:deborah> fg
       passwd
       hogdenb's Old password:
       hogdenb's New password:
       Re-enter hogdenb's new password:
       ~
[bash] 3:deborah> exec passwd
       Changing password for "hogdenb"
       hogdenb's Old password:
       hogdenb's New password:
       Re-enter hogdenb's new password:
[csh] 5:deborah> bash
       ~
[bash] 1:deborah> csh

       [1]+ Stopped (tty input) csh
       ~
[bash] 2:deborah> fg
       csh
[csh] 1:deborah>

The info docs on the RS6000 state explicitly that control of the
terminal is inherited by a child in a fork().

Again, anyone out there actually know what is going on here?

Thanks,
Brett
